Lyricism & Word Choice: Improving Your Prose

Lyricism and word choice aren’t just for poetry! When executed with intention, they can make all the difference in a piece of prose. In this 3-hour seminar, we will examine, through the medium of flash vignettes, the profound impact that economical word choices and lyrical sentences can have on a piece of writing. We will read exemplary works by published authors who successfully measure their words and incorporate lyricism into their prose. Students will generate a number of vignettes based on related writing prompts, and begin to hone those drafts using class feedback and personal reflection. This course is designed for writers of all levels and genres who want to generate new material and explore the flash form of storytelling through word choice and lyricism.
