Suicide can sometimes feel unexpected. The Philadelphia LGBTQ+ community recently lost one of its own to suicide, Deputy Sherriff Danté Austin, who was described by many as an upbeat, positive, and optimistic person. It can be difficult to understand when suicide occurs after an individual appeared to be hopeful and excited about their future.
The Lunch and Learn event, Suicide Prevention Within the LGBTQ+ Community, serves as a reminder of the unique needs of this community and as a tool to help others feel less alone and more supported. Please bring your lunch and join the DBHIDS LBGTQ+ Task Force and Philadelphia Suicide Prevention Task Force as we:
• Discuss appropriate identity language and explore the unique needs within the LGBTQ+ community
• Review statistics and risk factors associated with suicide among LGBTQ+ community members
• Identify and practice ways to assess if someone is at risk for attempted suicide
• Explore how allyship can support prevention
