Our program Love and Death in Venice celebrates the rich musical heritage of the magical city known as La Serenissima in instrumental and vocal works. A century and a half of instrumental virtuosity is traced, beginning with the innovative ensemble music of Giovanni Gabrieli and culminating in Vivaldi's monumental violin concerto, Il Grosso Mogul. Venice was also the birthplace of opera, recognized in the still vibrant work of Monteverdi (L'incoronazione di Poppea) and the overwhelming influence of Italian opera on Handel, who gave us masterpieces such as Rinaldo. The brilliant arias and duets selected for this program trace a theme of love, betrayal, and finally, acceptance. Join us to experience some of the greatest Baroque music ever performed!
Featuring Daniel Taylor in vocals for the flamboyant works of Handel and Venetian Masters with Cynthia Roberts directing the orchestra and performing in one of Vivaldi's great Violin Concertos. A musical feast not to be missed!
