Join us for another fantastic Local Author Night! We'll have Nicholas Hayes reading from his fall release, Ante-Animots: Idioms and Tales, along with Barnaby Dinges sharing excerpts from Ragged Run, Matthew Caracciolo presenting The Waygook Book, and Michael Young reading parts of Consequence of Murder: Algor Mortis.
About Nicholas Hayes:
Nicholas Alexander Hayes is a Chicago-based writer and educator. He is the author of Ante-Animots: Idioms and Tales, NIV: 39 & 27, and Between. He has written academically on ’60s gay pulp fiction, vintage beer advertisements, and depictions of masculinity on social media. He lives with his husband and two cats.
About Ante-Animots:
"These idioms and tales use language as a tool to lift a hazy film away from our perception and replace it with another. Is it surgery or a theater of cruelty, a catastrophe or a joke? It's an intervention into both the real and the imaginary not to show us that one lies beneath the other or hidden inside like a nested doll, but to remind us that animals are composed of wounds and words and that all of us are dying. It isn't pretty, and it is. It isn't imaginary, and none of it is real. It's a vicious and lyrical, lucid and fantastical, vast little book." - Stephen Beachy
About Barnaby Dinges:
Barnaby Leonhardt Dinges has been writing professionally for nearly 40 years and has authored features for the Peoria Journal Star, Berkeley Gazette, and Contra Costa Independent. He has also worked as an investigative journalist for The Chicago Reporter and, as a freelance writer, has published stories with Chicago magazine, Columbia Journalism Review, Chicago Sun-Times, and Chicago Reader. Barnaby is a graduate of Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut and received an MSJ from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. He lives in Northfield, Illinois with his wife Vicky and their famous Cairn Terrier, Emerson Boozer aka The Coyote Wrestler.
About Ragged Run:
Ragged Run is a memoir about survival, hope, and the determination to make it through tomorrow. With insight and humor, and aided by his mother’s journal (found a decade after her death), Barnaby recounts his journey from painful loss, to impermanent hopelessness, to true happiness. The result is a moving tribute to his family, that will speak to anyone who has experienced their own ragged run through the often trying streets of life.
About Matthew Caracciolo:
A freelance writer, Matthew has worked in a wide variety of topics including engineering, medical tourism, travel, local interest, and the startup community. His work has appeared on Amateurtraveler.com, in the Daegu Compass, Columbus Navigator, and Columbus: A Book Project. When he’s not writing freelance, Matthew likes to write short stories and for his blog, Travel is Fatal. He has a B.A. in English from The Ohio State University and a M.A. in Writing and Publishing from DePaul University, where he graduated with distinction. Together with his wife, Matthew has traveled to 14 countries on four continents. He currently lives in Columbus, OH, his hometown.
About The Waygook Book:
This a memoir/travelogue hybrid about leaving Chicago, spending two years in South Korea teaching English and then returning home to Columbus, OH. In between the adventures inside and outside the country, the book explores new-found foreignness, the meaning of home, and the inevitable worldview shakeup from living outside the United States.
About Michael Young:
Dr. Michael J. Young’s involvement in the medical field as a seasoned surgeon and educator led to his first book, The Illness of Medicine, which details his experiences with the current state of our health-care related issues and obstacles. Currently, his work is primarily engaged in the innovation and development of surgical instruments and medical devices. This research contributed to the writing of his medical-thriller, Consequence of Murder. Dr. Young resides in Chicago.
About Consequence of Murder:
Deep in the research labs of University Hospital, a biochemical engineer has developed a new material that he designed to behave in a specific biological manner. The co-developer of this product is a renowned surgeon with an impeccable reputation, using it for the first time on his patients. A large pharmaceutical company engaged in opioid manufacturing and marketing is attempting to promote the sale of its product to unscrupulous doctors — a whistle-blower in the drug industry unravels a pattern of illegal drug-promotion, and becomes an innocent target. These seemingly separate events become linked through deception, manipulation and intrigue within a hospital environment that makes us all unnerved. It is both entertaining and frightening to read how vulnerable we can all be as patients. Murder, money and greed come together with a seemingly untraceable method of death. This mandates a close read of the Consequence of Murder.
