Join Emerging Leaders Initiative of Utah on Feb. 22 for a special evening discussing the experiences of running for office at our Lessons Learned on the Campaign Trail event. 

Lt. Governor Spencer J. Cox will share his own campaign stories—from his first mayoral campaign to his most recent gubernatorial race with Gov. Herbert in 2016—followed by a brief Q&A. After his remarks, ELI will host a panel of elected millennial officials who will discuss their own successes, mistakes and lessons learned along the campaign trail.

The purpose of this non-partisan event is to inspire, inform and encourage young leaders to become more civically involved on a local, state and national level. Our panelists and speakers will give the attendees the opportunity to gain essential knowledge, insights and learn requirements needed to run for office themselves. 

Light snacks and beverages will be provided.

Transportation: Very limited parking is available. We encourage attendees to take public transportation. Paid parking is available across the street at the Salt Lake City Library. 

Church & State is located directly next to the Library Trax Station, which is part of the UTA Free Fare Zone (map).

Current/matriculating students at both University of Utah and Salt Lake Community College receive a complimentary access to UTA transportation with a valid student ID.

About Keynote Speaker Lt. Governor Spencer J. Cox

Spencer J. Cox was sworn in as Utah's 8th Lieutenant Governor on October 16, 2013. Previously, Spencer began his political career at age 29, serving as city councilman before being elected mayor at Fairview City at age 30. He was then elected Sanpete County Commissioner before serving in the Utah House of Representatives, representing most of Sanpete and Juab Counties.

As Lieutenant Governor, he serves as the chief election officer, liaison between the governor and the state legislature, and serves on 20 committees and commissions, chairing 12 of them.

As the state’s chief election officer, Spencer oversees the Utah State Elections Office and is responsible for ensuring the proper conduct of elections throughout the state. This includes providing calendars, ballot certification, primary election funding, legal interpretations of election laws to election officials, voter registration and other election issues.
