Learn to Create Responsive HTML/CSS Emails

You used your HTML/CSS prowess and built an email but it breaks in mobile, or Gmail, or Outlook. Don’t throw your computer against the wall just yet. Coding for emails is it’s own beast. Engineering that builds off the basics of HTML/CSS front-end design, but has its own set of specific guidelines.

This workshop aims to give attendees the basics of what is different -and the same -about coding for email. At the end of the day, you will walk out the door with a custom, stable template designed and tested yourself, and with more insight as to just how email design and coding works.

Who should attend this workshop?

Anyone with rudimentary knowledge of HTML & CSS who wants to learn how to code clean, customizable and stable email templates that look good on all devices.

Are there any prior knowledge/skills required?

Intro to HTML & CSS. Javascript a plus.

What will I learn?

• How an email code travels between servers and how the code can be changed in each step
• CAN-SPAM guidelines and laws
• How email clients, browsers and devices can all affect how emails render
• Fundamentals of responsive email design, including the mobile first approach, coding for the lowest common denominator, and table-based layout design
• Create a fully functioning, responsive email

About Your Instructor

Kat Gardiner specializes in responsive, hand-coded email design, with a background in photography, design and fiction. After 10 years of freelancing for Fortune 500 companies--Tommy Hilfiger, Amazon, NBCUniversal and others—as well as start-ups including BarkBox, Seeso, and Key.Me, she became the in-house Senior Email Engineer at StockX in 2019.
