Landscape of Science Policy Lecture Series

Mary Woolley is President and CEO of Research!America, the nation’s largest not-for-profit alliance working to make research to improve health a higher national priority. Woolley is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine (formerly the Institute of Medicine) and served two terms on its Governing Council. She is a recipient of the NAM’s Adam Yarmolinsky Medal for distinguished service. She serves on the National Academy of Sciences Board on Higher Education and the Workforce. She is a founding member of the Board of Associates of the Whitehead Institute, and a member of The Division of the Biological Sciences and the Pritzker School of Medicine Council of the University of Chicago. Prior to Research!America, she was the CEO of the Medical Research Institute of San Francisco. She holds two honorary doctoral degrees, from the Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) and Wayne State University. 

Kathleen Goss graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from the College of Wooster (Ohio) and a Ph.D. in Cell Biology from Vanderbilt University working in the laboratory of Lynn Matrisian.  After a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Molecular Genetics, Biochemistry and Microbiology at the University of Cincinnati with Joanna Groden, Dr. Goss started her independent research program at the University of Cincinnati and then moved her laboratory to the University of Chicago in 2007.  The major focus of her work has been the molecular events responsible for breast and colorectal tumor initiation and progression, with a particular emphasis on the APC tumor suppressor gene and Wnt signal transduction pathway.  Her work has been supported by grants from the American Cancer Society, Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Concern Foundation, American Association for Cancer Research, and National Cancer Institute.  In 2013, she became the Senior Science Writer and Director of Strategic Partnerships at the University of Chicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Center as part of the communications team and responsible for integrating cancer outreach, advocacy and education efforts. She has been a volunteer with the American Cancer Society (ACS) and its sister advocacy organization, the ACS Cancer Action Network, for more than 14 years.
