The performance incorporates stagings of algorithmically mutated texts from Les Mamelles de Tiresias (The Tits of Tiresias), a gender queer play for which the author, Guillaume Apollinaire, coined the word surrealism in 1917. For the play’s centennial year, we will present a work of mixed and augmented surreality in which virtual elements are juxtaposed with objects, bodies and spaces via a smartphone app.
In Apollinaire’s play, Theresa transforms into a war like Tiresias while her husband gives birth to 40,049 babies. To explore queer reproduction, ATOM r is working choreographically with the Cornish ‘Obby ‘Oss festival, an annual fertility ritual in which a masquerade horse is awakened by a night song and, following the day long festivities, returned to his stable to die.
