Students will learn to create experimental imagery on glass using kilnforming techniques and the wet plate collodion (ambrotype) process. The first part of the course will be held at UrbanGlass and led by Dorie Guthrie. While at UrbanGlass, students will learn kilnforming and coldworking techniques to make glass plates with color, texture, distortion, and embedded imagery. The second portion of the course will be held at Pioneer Works and led by former Visual Arts Resident Rowan Renee. At Pioneer Works, students will use their glass creations as substrates for the ambrotype process. Students will learn to prepare glass for the wet plate collodion process, as well as the chemistry to sensitize, expose, and develop ambrotypes. Focus will be placed on studio lighting and discussions of DIY methods for modifying large format cameras and film holders to accommodate unusual, or dimensional substrates. Open to all skill levels.
