Join a Duke Farms’ educator to learn why Duke Farms is “For the Birds!” Through games and activities, we will explore the fascinating life histories of birds and delve into topics such as bird biology, adaptations for flight, behavior, diets and habitats. Part of each program is spent indoors exploring the topic of the month and then we go outdoors to identify and observe birds in the field. This program will run rain or shine, so please dress for the weather, bring a refillable water bottle, and be prepared to walk between one and two miles with varying trail conditions. Binoculars will be provided.

*Note: These programs are designed for families with children ages 7-12. At least 1 adult must accompany each family of children during this program, with no more than two adults accompanying each family. We cannot accommodate any younger children who are not currently ages 7-12. This includes the younger siblings of participant, as well as any toddlers or babies in arms, carriers, slings or strollers. ACCOMPANYING ADULTS ARE ALSO REQUIRED TO REGISTER and pay the listed fee.

January 26: Birds from The Beginning
This program is an introduction to birds. We will explore the unique characteristics of birds including their anatomy, adaptations, and behavior. Families will be introduced to the basics of bird identification and will learn how to use binoculars. We will then go on a bird walk to observe the winter bird residents of Duke Farms at bird feeders and in the field.

February 23: Eagles; Our Early Nesters
Everyone is excited about the eagles that live and nest at Duke Farms. Did you know they live here year-round and lay their eggs in the middle of winter? This program will include the life cycle and habits of our majestic eagles.

March 29: Spring Migration; Flight and Feathers
Many birds flew the coop for the winter, but they begin to return with the first signs of spring. We will learn how birds are adapted for long migration flights and take an in depth look at feathers and features that make flight possible.

April 19: Tweets and Twitters; Bird Communication
May is the time when birds become very vocal and even noisy as they establish territories and search for mates. We will explore bird communication as well as mating and nesting. Put your cell phones away as we listen for the live tweets, twitters and songs of the birds of spring.
