Julio daCunha’s creative spirit is most evident in his artistic experimentation. He alternated between abstraction and realism throughout his career. His primary medium was acrylic on canvas, but he produced ceramics, etchings, digital prints, and photography. As a child, he fell in love with the work of Renaissance artists in his father’s extensive art library. His passion for history extended to timeless myths, and in his art, he interpreted them in a contemporary way. DaCunha’s drive to learn expanded into history, music, and art—which inspires his acquaintances to refer to him as a Renaissance man.
Born in Columbia into an artistic family, Julio daCunha came to the United States to study art. After graduating from Cranbrook Art Academy in Michigan, he settled in Delaware in 1956. DaCunha taught at the University of Delaware for 35 years, earning the University’s highest faculty honor, the Francis Alison Faculty Award. We recognize daCunha for his lasting legacy in the local community as an artist, teacher, and mentor.
Julio daCunha: Modernizing Myths was curated by Olivia Armandroff through the support of the Alfred Appel, Jr. Curatorial Fellowship.
