Title: Art by Nature Series

Sundays 3 - 5 PM

Purpose:

Use the natural world as inspiration in the process based series designed for all skill levels. Participants are introduced to a variety of art materials and concepts, and given space to explore themes with guidance from the instructor. Basic supplies are included.  However, students may want to bring their own. See the suggested list of supplies below for each week. 

Cost: $35/class. $180/6 weeks (includes $5/week material fee)

Themes:

Week 1) Expressive lines are all around us: fast, slow, delicate, and strong, they inform our understanding of the materials in our environment.  This week we will focus on identifying and expressing a variety of lines to create interest in our drawings.  Suggested materials: charcoal, drawing pencils, sketchbook.

Week 2) Animals in flight can be particularly challenging to draw from life.  Learn how to use movement to capture these elusive creatures. Suggested materials to bring: sketchbook, drawing pencils, camera.

Week 3) Nature journals are a wonderful way to explore and reflect on nature.  Learn or practice different techniques as we slow down and focus on the world around us. Suggested materials: sketchbook, drawing pencils.

Week 4) Layering with watercolor and pastel is a great way to work outdoors and on location.  Learn a process based approach to capturing the energy of a space.  Suggested materials: Watercolors, brushes, watercolor sketchbook, oil pastels, chalk pastels.

Week 5) Color can tell a story, creating rhythm or focus in a painting.  This week we practice using color to guide the viewer through an artwork.  Suggested materials: watercolors, brushes, oil pastel, watercolor paper.

Week 6) Space is sculpted on a flat surface using light, dark, warm, and cool colors.  This week we focus on setting up and effectively using your color pallet to create dynamic space in your compositions.  Suggested materials: Watercolors, pastels, watercolor paper, brushes.

About the instructor:

With over twenty years teaching experience, artist and educator Jessica Monroe shares her love of art and the outdoors.  Using watercolors, pastels, and a camera, Monroe explores delicate and endangered ecosystems which inform large-scale oil paintings full of energy and movement.  Monroe holds a Bachelor of Arts from Southwestern University and studied painting at New York University and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.  To learn more and see her work please visit www.JessicaMonroe.com.
