In honor of its 60th anniversary, the HRT has produced the legendary Broadway treasure, JAMAICA – the show that made Lena Horne a Broadway star! JAMAICA takes its audience on a journey to Pigeon Island off the coast of Jamaica, following an ambitious island girl named Savannah who dreams of finding true love and escaping to New York City. The production examines how an isolated island community navigates the perils of love, family, and relationships while they confront the increasing pressures of American commercialism, class struggles and racism - while trying to avoid nuclear war.
The music is by Harold Arlen who wrote the iconic score for THE WIZARD OF OZ. Fred Saidy and Yip Harburg who gave us the masterpiece, FINIAN’S RAINBOW created book (Saidy) and lyrics (Harburg) for JAMAICA.
