Interspecies Improv and The Viewpoints

Imagine a scene between an angry Bird and a Depressed CEO trying to repair a copy machine together, and this is the start of imagining the whimsical and hilarious nature of Interspecies Improv.

I start with Movement Improv structures and techniques ranging from Post Modern Dance aesthetics, to Laban’s qualities of movement, to simply leading explorations of the infinite ways our Bodies can make shapes and move in order to break the boundaries of what could be identified as pedestrian, Human movement. I use imagery also asking the class to move as Birds, Dogs, Clouds, a Pencil, a CEO etc. Infinite possibilities arise.

Then the Fun begins after we physically create these characters, give them side coaching with Emotions, or Accents or whatever, and put them in scenes together. The scenes are always Fresh, Touching, Hilarious and more.

Anne Bassen is a Choreographer, Dancer, and Improv Theater teacher who lives in Brooklyn, NY. Her Improv classes are informed by her aesthetics and training in Post Modern Dance, Contact Improv, Expressive Arts Therapy. She has been an Improviser in Dance, Theater and music for thirty years. Her classes  are a unique blend of Movement and Theater Improv. Her independent choreographed works have won many awards and grants over the last thirty years.

Anne presently teaches Improv Theater and Movement in NYC, at Improv Festivals in Europe and in other places in the US.

She also has taught The Viewpoints in NYC and Europe. She currently teaches at The Borough of Manhattan Community College, Parsons School of Design, her own independent classes and other places. She has taught Workshops in Vienna and Krems, Austria as well as Warsaw, Poland and other cities in the USA.
