2017 NEA Big Read Kickoff
HIDDEN FIGURES: AFRICAN AMERICAN MATHEMATICIANS AT NASA

Presidential Medal of Freedom winner and NASA research mathematician Katherine Johnson did groundbreaking work on Project Mercury, Apollo 11 and other projects. Johnson and other African American female colleagues are profiled in the book Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly and the upcoming movie of the same name starring Taraji P. Henson. We will play an interview JMRL has recorded with Katherine Moore, Ms. Johnson's daughter, discussing her mother's life. Ms. Moore is no longer able to attend in person because she has been invited to the Academy Awards.

NEA Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest.
