Ammonium quaternary compounds, or “quats,” are potent disinfectant chemicals commonly found in disinfectant wipes, sprays and other household cleaners that are designed to kill germs. Quats are also powerful skin irritants that can irritate the lungs and have been linked to asthma, fertility issues, and reproductive harm. These are NOT chemicals that babies, children, women, pets, or anyone should be exposed to.
While quats, and disinfectants in general, are encouraged for us to use when we clean our homes, schools, childcare facilities, and communities, the toxic chemicals in these products are seriously harmful to our health and environment.
In fact, using antibacterial cleaners has never been proven to be more effective at reducing illness than just using soap and water, and the overuse of quats can promote antibacterial-resistant bacteria (“superbugs”).
Cleaning product companies must have stronger safety standards for all of their products so that harmful chemicals like quats don’t end up in the products we use; in our homes, schools, and communities; and in our little ones.
