This is a paid workshop that will be in three parts, please don t RSVP until you have registered and paid at https://lorenphotos.com/mevents/hdr-photography-workshop/.

There are many times when we are making photos that we can’t get the proper exposure on all areas of the scene. If we expose for the bright area the dark areas get too dark. If we expose for the dark part of the scene then the lighter parts become too bright. It is a limitation of our cameras not being able to record all the tonal values in many scenes. That is called the Dynamic Range of the camera and it varies slightly from camera to camera but all of them have their limits. We can expand the dynamic range by making multiple shots using different exposures and then putting the shots together in the computer using the best exposure from each shot. That is known as High Dynamic Range or HDR.

If you shoot landscapes, holding detail in the shadows and highlights can make all the difference in the world. The scene doesn’t need to have as extreme lighting as you might think, HDR can turn a normal scene into a great shot. If you shoot interior photos, being able to hold detail in windows while maintaining a proper exposure inside the room is a great trick to have in your toolkit. And cityscapes take on a whole new look when done with HDR.

In this workshop you’ll learn how to recognize scenes that would benefit from HDR, you’ll be surprised what HDR does for many scenes, even ones you might not consider for HDR. You’ll learn how to plan a HDR shoot, if you need any special equipment, how to determine what your exposures should be and how many exposures you need to shoot. You’ll learn about exposure bracketing and whether to let your camera do it or to do it manually. We’ll talk about metering modes in cameras and how to know what part of the scene to use for determining proper exposure.

Then we go into processing the photos and I’ll show you how to create HDRs in the computer. We’ll do basic conversions using Lightroom and also Aurora HDR for more complex situations.

The workshop is in three parts, two of them are with me, the other on your own. On June 4 we’ll have an extensive classroom session, then you have 12 days to shoot and process photos and then we get back together on June 16 for feedback and questions. The feedback will not only help with your HDR processing but also shooting and composition. You’ll be able to clear up problems you might have encountered.
