Harriet Lerner/Jacqui Lewis: Power of Apology, Complexity of Forgiveness

Does a simple apology matter? What is required for healing when the hurt we've inflicted (or received) is far from simple? Is forgiveness is the only path to peace of mind? What drives both the non-apologizer and the over-apologizer? Why do the Hebrew and Christian scriptures encourage making restitution and offering apology for wrongs done to one’s neighbors, family and friends, and even for transgressions to one’s God?

We are excited to present an evening on a crucial topic of our time, discussed by two experts in the field. Jacqui Lewis will speak from her perspective as pastor, and public theologian and activist and Harriet Lerner from her perspective as a psychologist and psychotherapist.  We anticipate that the different lenses through which our presenters view the apology and the subject of forgiveness will  challenge and deepen the conversation for all of us.

Harriet Lerner, Ph.D.  is one of our nation's most respected relationship experts, best known for her scholarly work on the psychology of women and family dynamics.  Her twelve books include The New York Times bestselling, The Dance of Anger, and the newly released,  Why Won't You Apologize  Lerner was a staff psychologist at The Menninger Clinic for several decades and currently has a private psychotherapy practice in Lawrence, Kansas.

The Rev. Dr. Jacqui Lewis is Senior Minister at Middle Collegiate Church, a 900-member multiracial, welcoming, and inclusive congregation in NYC. She is an activist, preacher, and fierce advocate for racial, LGBTQ and economic justice. She is the author of several publications, including a children’s book that celebrates diversity, You Are So Wonderful!

The New York State Education Department has approved this workshop for 2.0 contact hours (CEUs) for LMSWs and LCSWs. A certificate will be emailed upon request to those who complete an evaluation form and sign the attendance sheet at the end of the workshop.
