NOTE: Because of the time and detail involved in designing, sculpting and polishing a small stone sculpture, we STRONGLY encourage you to book a block of these classes. One class will simply get the process started. A block of 4 classes will bring your small project to fruition and save you money!

Learn stone carving like the Renaissance masters! The process of carving stone with hand chisels and mallet is an extremely satisfying ancient art form. It is a medium that develops manual dexterity and craftsmanship with a high degree of mental and perceptual stimulation.
We are pleased to offer instruction for all skill levels. Learn to see what naturally emerges from the stone and how to carve your vision into reality. Options for carving include: drawings, relief carving, and carving in-the-round. You will learn how to finish the stone to a shiny polish, and/or create unique textures.
Beginners typically start with a bar of soap and small tools and then move to soapstone as it is soft and forgiving, for once the stone is carved away it is a final part of the artwork and cannot return to the stone. Alabaster is a beautiful stone choice for all skill levels and recommended after lessons in soapstone carving.
This series of 4 four-hour classes is for beginners to advanced artists. It is $350 for the classes, studio tool use, dust mask, and one small soapstone. Other stones are available for purchase if you want something larger or in a different color.
Our instructor will help you design your stone sculpture, and teach you how to remove material using hand tools like rasps, files, and chisels. After your sculpture emerges from the stone you will learn how to polish it.
