Growing the Pea, Carrot, and Lettuce Families
We’ll cover the
Legume
family which includes
peas
,
beans
(green and dry), and
lentils
. The
Carrot
(
Apiaceae
) family also includes parsnips and celery along with many herbs like dill, fennel, and caraway. Puget Sound’s mild climate makes it a great place to grow members of the
lettuce
(
Asteraceae
) family just about year-round. We’ll cover the extensive varieties available along with a discussion of raising artichokes.
Topics covered include variety selection, cultural requirements, as well as the major disease and pests affecting these species.
Diane Decker-Ihle
, Master Gardener and Growing Groceries Instructor, will share what’s she’s learned over many years of growing an abundance of fresh food not only in her home garden, but several community and food bank gardens as well.
Kate Ryan
of Soil Sisters Plants & Produce will share what she’s learned in over 30 years of growing vegetables, herbs, and flowers in Western Washington. A self-professed lazy gardener, she’s learned from her many mistakes over the years.
No matter if you only have a tiny apartment deck, small garden space, or plenty of acreage you can grow fresh, healthy food in a healthier, more environmentally friendly way.
The WSU Snohomish County Growing Groceries program brings beginning and experienced gardeners together with speakers and topics focused on growing healthy food using sustainable gardening practices.
Developed over the last several years, the program’s goal is to increase our communities’ access to fresh, healthy food by teaching the latest research-based techniques for growing food.
WSU Extension programs and employment are available to all without discrimination. Evidence of noncompliance may be reported through your local extension office. Reasonable accommodations will be made for persons with disabilities and special needs; contact WSU Extension at 425-338-2400 at least two weeks prior to the event.
