He credits fishing with enabling him to discover the joy of conservation philanthropy, and the Gates Foundation with helping to shape his personal philanthropic practices which include his own Sol Duc and Orinoco Foundations which are focused on conservation and underserved populations, respectively. He lives and works in Seattle, Washington. Aubrey and Peggy Layne – Virginia Secretary of Finance for Governor Northam and former Secretary of Transportation for Governor McAuliffe, Aubrey and wife Peggy recently moved to Richmond from Hampton Roads and have a history of philanthropy including their recent donation of Neptune Virginia Beach Maquette by sculptor Paul DiPasquale to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Dr. Monroe E. Harris, Jr. and Dr. Jill Bussey – Monroe is president of the board of trustees of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts – the first African-American to hold that position. He has also headed the boards of Virginia Repertory Theatre and the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia. Jill’s nonprofit board and leadership involvement has been extensive including SPARC, Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, and The Links Inc. Together the couple has established The Monroe E. Harris, Jr. and Jill Bussey Harris Scholarship for African-American Students at the University of Louisville School of Dentistry. Jeff Wells and Mac Pence – Jeff, a former attorney for the U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, and Mac, former president of the Pence Auto Group, have had important RVA philanthropic involvement including Richmond Triangle Players and Second Presbyterian Church, both of which have included board and campaign leadership roles. Lawrence L. Gray – Lawrence is Chairman and CEO of GrayCo Inc., a fifth generation family business with its roots in the lumber business and whose primary focus and holdings since 1992 have been high-end apartments located throughout the Southeast. Lawrence and his wife Freddie have been active philanthropists in RVA and beyond and have served on a variety of nonprofit boards, foundation boards and campaign committees including for the James River Association, Community Foundation for a Greater Richmond, World Pediatric Project, Richmond Sports Backers, Virginia Home for Boys and Girls, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Foundation, VCU Institute for Contemporary Art, St. Catherine’s School, Woodberry Forest School and the University of North Carolina. Donors of the $20,000 Prize Money The following philanthropists, as well as one anonymous philanthropist, have each committed $5,000 for this competition: David B. Robinson, a CPA specializing in tax preparation and entrepreneurial consulting, has had important involvement in RVA’s nonprofit community, serving as Acting Chief Financial Officer for CenterStage Foundation (now Richmond Performing Arts Alliance) from 2008-2009, Chairing the Richmond Symphony's Amazing Raise and Music Marathon campaigns and serving on the boards of Firehouse Theatre Project, Richmond Shakespeare (now Quill Theatre), project:HOMES and Randolph-Macon College.  Pam and Bill Royall have provided leadership philanthropic support for organizations and projects in the arts, healthcare, and education benefiting diverse audiences ranging from children to seniors.  Brooks Smith, Managing Partner for the law firm Troutman Sanders’ Richmond Office, has had widespread philanthropic and leadership involvement in RVA’s nonprofit community including board roles with CultureWorks, Maymont Foundation, the Valentine, Richmond Jazz Society, Capital Region Land Conservancy, Richmond Public Library Foundation and others.  Giving Tuesday RVA CONTACT:John Bryan, (840) 356-9552, jbryanfish@aol.com
