Clearly, substance abuse among seniors is at epidemic proportions, but what can those who care for older adults do to identify and prevent this rampant misuse of controlled substances? What are the warning signs to look for in elderly patients and clients facing these struggles? New research and information is now available that could dramatically affect how senior care workers help older adults avoid becoming victims of substance abuse. In this interactive and practical session, participants will learn: How to integrate two self-screening tools to determine substance abuse risk with the seniors they work with. New ways to identify signs and symptoms of problem drinking for seniors. Local treatment options available for seniors dealing with substance abuse. About the Presenter... Karissa Borchert, MSW, LGSW Director of Clinical Operations, Complete Care Group Karissa graduated from Minnesota State University, Mankato with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and completed her Masters of Social Work (MSW) from the University of Minnesota. Karissa has worked in a variety of social service and medical settings most frequently with adults and elders. She also has extensive experience working with seniors facing the challenges of substance abuse and their families. In her role with Complete Care Group she leads a team that provides care coordination services for senior communities across the Twin Cities and most recently into Southern Minnesota.
