Forensic Social Work’s Role in Advancing Human Rights and Social Justice: A Local Global Celebration

Please join the Fordham University Graduate School of Social Services and the Justia Agenda in celebrating “Forensic Social Work’s Role in Advancing Human Rights and Social Justice: A Local Global Celebration.” The event will bring together social workers and allies whose work entails promoting human rights and social justice and individual, family, and community well-being at the intersection of the civil and criminal justice legal systems. The planning committee has chosen the five themes to highlight the contributions of forensic social workers: (1) peace, safety, and security, (2) freedom from torture, cruel, inhumane, and degrading punishment, (3) the right to the arts and science, (4) access to justice and fairness, and (5) the right to health and holistic well-being (e.g. physical, mental, spiritual, education, economic, social, political, cultural).

The event includes:

• OPENING PLENARY ADDRESS: Dr. Joseph Wronka (human rights author, educator, and activist) action-oriented discussion on: Creating a Human Rights Culture:  Implications for Helping and Health Professionals.  Read more about Dr. Wronka here.

  CLOSING PLENARY ADDRESS: John A. Calhoun, Founder and President of the National Crime Prevention Council, will give an inspirational talk on:  Policy Walking: Lighting Paths to Safer Communities, Stronger Families, and Thriving Youth Read more about Mr. Calhoun here.

  PANEL PRESENTATIONS INCLUDE:

• Leadership from NASW National and Local Chapters dialoguing about: NASW Social Justice Initiatives: Policy and Implications for Practice

• Invited presenters include social work faculty and community partners whose contributions to their local and global communities advance one or more of the identified themes in forensic research, scholarship, practice, policy, and/or advocacy;

• local and global 'change-makers' giving skills-based workshops on innovations in research practice, advocacy, and organizing;

• facilitated group dialogue (reflective action circles) based on the five major human rights and social justice themes;

• networking and a take-away collective action agenda.
