Event ended

Hi.

Since mid-March, I ve canceled / removed in-person events due to health & safety reasons. Despite some cognitive dissonance, I ll post a few volunteer opportunities.

Please keep in mind that COVID-19 is still an issue, and some events, charities, non-profits, etc. might have enough volunteers, so it s totally okay to stay home and avoid going out in public. However, if anyone really wants to help, then some events will be scheduled.

Large gatherings should be avoided due to the coronavirus pandemic, so if 1 - 2 people are interested in this, feel free to communicate and coordinate with each other on where & when to meet, how to find each other, etc.

I am mostly just posting various volunteer opportunities. I myself might not attend, but you and other group members can still attend and meet without me.

Meetup allows group members to host events without the main organizer (me); so if any of you want to be the point-of-contact for others, lmk.

The following section below contains relevant info/details. Please read carefully, and if you decide to attend/participate, please take the necessary precautions and be safe (face mask/covering, physical distancing, wash hands, use hand sanitizer, gloves, etc.).

Clarification:

I m not affiliated, associated, nor connected.

Similar to a family member, friend, or co-worker sharing on social media about a restaurant, movie, book, song, etc. they like, I use Meetup to share about volunteer opportunities.

A librarian might not have written the books in a library, but s/he can still recommend books to the public.

So I m simply suggesting some volunteer events that I think others might be open to helping with.

FAQ

Q: Why can t I just show up? If I sign up here on Meetup, why do I also have to sign up with another person or register on another site?

A: I don t want anyone to show up to find out the event is canceled / rescheduled, or that they have too many volunteers and room isn t available for you to help.

Registering with them will save you a spot with them and they can confirm the date, start time, address, parking info, instructions, and updates if anything changes.

Scroll down for more info on how to register with them.

I try to spread the word about volunteer opportunities and raise awareness about non-profits/charities that do good work.

This event is from Hollywood Food Coalition (formerly known as Greater West Hollywood Food Coalition or GWHFC).

Before coronavirus, they served a sit-down dinner indoors, Monday - Friday, and a food line table outdoors, Saturday - Sunday.

Now because of COVID, they serve a "takeaway meal"

So despite the pandemic, they are still serving food 7 days a week, every day.

This video is pre-coronavirus, but it shows what they are about:

During this pandemic, they ve adjusted their meal service to this:

Note: To help me save time, this is automatically posted on some days.

However, if anyone wants to help, you NEED to register directly/yourself with Hollywood Food Coalition.

I did NOT reserve any volunteer shift for our group, so if YOU want to help, YOU need to sign up with them. Especially with COVID, they need to keep the number of volunteers to a manageable and safe number, but they also don t want to be short-handed. So if you re the type of person who is unreliable and untrustworthy, please don t be a flake/ghost and sign up, and then fail to show up, because they honestly need everyone who signs up to actually commit to helping. Thank you for understanding and cooperating.

If anyone wants to help, but not alone, then one group member, Jordan, tries to help 1-2 times a week. He is friendly, so if anyone wants to meet up and volunteer together, feel free to contact him:

Two ways to help (your choice)

(1) Meal Preparation - (Mon - Fri shift is 1:30 pm - 5:30 pm, Sat shift is 1:30 pm - 6:00 pm, and Sun shift is 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm)

and/or

(2) Meal Service - (Mon - Fri shift is 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm, and Sat & Sun shift is 6:15 pm - 8:30 pm)

-

Meal prep involves tasks like food prep (chopping/cutting), making salads, making sandwiches, sorting food donations, preparing the actual food, etc.

In the past, most of the regular/experienced/returning volunteers helped with cooking, but maybe they might allow new volunteers to help, depending on the lead chef. I m unsure how exactly things are now due to COVID, but my guess is they need all the help they can get.

-

Meal service involves serving the food to the guests. On weekdays (Mon - Fri), they used to serve the food inside at the same location/venue, but now because of COVID, they are handing out "take away" meals at the kitchen door. On weekends (Sat & Sun), they go serve directly to people living on the streets. They meet outdoors on a street, and set up near a sidewalk, and people stand in line for the food. After all the food is served, some return to the kitchen and wash/clean.

Minimum age to help is 15.

If interested in helping, go to

https://www.signupgenius.com/go/409044cadab2ba5f85-volunteer

and please read everything carefully.

The default tab is on Meal Service. If you want to help with serving food, then read their description regarding that role/shift.

If you want to help with meal prep, then on the top left corner, click on "Meal Prep (Daytime)" and read their description regarding that role/shift.

-

If after reading all the info/details, you want to help, then look for the date/time/shift you want to help with, and if space is available, check the box next to "Sign up"

On the bottom of the page, click "Submit and Sign Up"

to officially register with Hollywood Food Coalition.

-

To repeat, if interested in helping, registering with them is needed. Signing up here on Meetup is insufficient. They have their own sign-up process. Due to COVID-19, many places prefer to limit # of volunteers (to allow for physical distancing), so if serious about helping, sign up with Hollywood Food Coalition on their Signup Genius registration page. They can provide more info/details (e.g. when to arrive, where to park, what to bring, etc.).

And please remember to read their FAQ:

Helping with food prep doesn t require advanced culinary skills. They have simple tasks like chopping veggies & fruit, making a salad or sandwiches, cleaning pots & pans, etc.

If helping with meal prep, go to The Salvation Army - Weingart Youth Center, 5939 Hollywood Blvd, Los Angeles, 90028 (between Gower and Bronson).

The parking lot might be restricted. Try street parking on Hollywood Blvd, Bronson Ave, Gower St, or in the back, Carlos Ave.

Please check signs/meters wherever you park.

After parking, look for a glass door with a blue frame (Salvation Army):

highres_458314168.jpeg

Knock or ring the buzzer, and a staff member should let you in.

highres_458314170.jpeg

After entering, turn left and go through a hallway/door, and the kitchen should appear. Ask for the lead cook. S/he can help you get started.

____________________

If helping with meal service on Monday - Friday, then the aforementioned should be the same, meet at The Salvation Army - Weingart Youth Center, 5939 Hollywood Blvd, Los Angeles, 90028.

-

If helping with meal service on Saturday or Sunday, then go to N. Orange Drive between Santa Monica Blvd. & Romaine Street.

To repeat, their meal service on Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs, and Fri is at The Salvation Army - Weingart Youth Center, 5939 Hollywood Blvd, Los Angeles, 90028.

And their meal service on Sat & Sun is elsewhere where they set up tables on a street, where people wait in line on a sidewalk.

If your GPS or phone navigation app needs an actual address, try 1009 N, 1024 N., or 1027 N. Orange Drive, Los Angeles, 90038. It s near Hollywood & West Hollywood.

You should see something like this:

https://goo.gl/maps/orB4tz4GDnH2uzGB9

At night, for meal service on Saturday & Sundays, it might be dark, so look at these photos to give you a better idea of what to look for (such as street graffiti art and people standing on sidewalk):

If they finish cooking late, the van/truck might arrive late, so thank you for your patience.

Major cross streets are Santa Monica Blvd and La Brea Ave.

Look for people standing on the sidewalk and the truck/van should arrive in that area...next to the street graffiti art.
