As our final solo jazz instructor, we are so excited to have LaTasha Barnes! She has won multiple championships in House dancing, and has taken the swing dancing scene by storm. We love the power, energy, and personality she brings to her dancing and teaching. We also greatly admire her for her passion for cultural activism: she helps run Urban Artistry, Inc, which aims to preserve the arts that represent the urban experience. Check out this hilarious performance by LaTasha, Barbara Billups, and Sugar Sullivan to the singing of Barbara Morisson. This is such a special performance! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VaXkUqZMOVs

Clint Baker is inseparable from the San Francisco Lindy Hop scene, continually raising the bar of live music for swing dancers. He has been a staple of FCS since Year 1, when he put together Clint Baker's Golden Gate Swing Band just for our event. His willingness to invest in and collaborate on long-term projects like this make him a one-of-a-kind treasure who has truly shaped the direction of the evening dances at FCS. His incredible knowledge of jazz history informs his band leading in such a way his music feels both vintage and fresh. We often feature his band in our dance contests because he's able to feed off the energy of dancers, pushing them forward to dance their best. We are immensely grateful to have such a wonderful musician and a wonderful person right here in our local scene! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7qrGTR8wHQ

Happy Pride! We welcome ALL people at our event and we are dedicated to providing a safe, nurturing environment for everyone. We do have a Code of Conduct that we require all staff, instructors, musicians, and attendees to follow. Please take a moment to read it over, then keep on being your awesome self! :) http://fogcitystomp.com/code-of-conduct

Social dance competitions test the widest range of skills from its competitors; no two contests are ever the same! In the higher levels, we get to see novel pairings of our favorite dancers. In the lower levels, we get to see dancers test their ability to connect with a partner and meet their own personal challenges. Newer dancers might want just a low-pressure way to try competing for the first time, while more experienced competitors must have the ability to connect well with any partner, regardless of their skill level. Last year we ended up with a handful of people challenging themselves further by competing in their secondary role! Our Social division is open this year, which means anyone can throw their hat in the ring. The emphasis on partner connection; not just the physical connection through your arms but also through your intention and engagement. Check out last year's finalists, and shout out to our winners Voon and Aj who dazzled our eyes! <3 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKTaDGw16hU

We are ecstatic to welcome Manu Smith to our lineup of Solo Jazz instructors! He's a seasoned pro after teaching all over the world for 16 years, from New York to Herräng Dance Camp to San Francisco. His style of teaching is inclusive yet challenging; he's able to listen to his students and give individualized feedback, all while bringing an incredible depth of knowledge and history to the dance. His talents extend so far beyond the classroom, though! He also started Yehoodi, ran the live broadcasts of ILHC and Frankie 100, advises the 9:20 Special, co-hosts the Hey Mister Jesse Podcast with DJ Jesse Miner, runs the Swingnation show, created the SwingFlix movie reviews, DJs a killer soul music night, and produces a plethora of other media like his video production guide Pull My Focus. He's basically an iceberg: super cool and 90% of his greatness out of view (usually because he's shining the spotlight on others). Here he is performing "Stomp Stomp," which he originally choreographed in 2007 with Nathan Dias and Michael Terkowski. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jgz2Gr-NHmo

Manu - you are the most talented person I know. I've told you that before (or at least I've thought it a million times so hopefully I've told you 😆) but it never hurts to mention it again! And I'm soooo excited you're a part of the teacher lineup this year!! San Francisco is f-ing lucky to have you here!!!! ❤️

We LOVE Paul Cosentino's music just as much as he loves the dancers! He was one of the first bandleaders playing for Lindy Hoppers during the swing resurgence, which has allowed him to refine his unique, iconic style of playing clarinet over the years. He truly is a one-man reeds powerhouse- just put him in front of a good rhythm section and he tears it up! Last year, he kept everyone dancing so long on Sunday night that we ended up extending the dance. Check him out in this clip, then buy all of his CDs! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ZPy6QyDFXQ

Our Solo Jazz contest has been a staple of FCS, even before we had any solo jazz classes! We view solo jazz as an integral part of any Lindy Hopper's dancing, so we host a contest where people who have honed their craft can really strut their stuff. We love that this throw-down style contest has very few rules- the dancers can make of it what they want! It's been amazing to see how much the dancers have grown and how much this contest has developed over the past 5 years. Shout out to our top 3 dancers last year who definitely brought some heat: Shannon Lea Watkins, Sean Krazit, and Idalia Ramos! Check them out in the video :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzqU4U-gZzM

If you've never seen this clip before, you NEED to stop and watch! I can remember the exact moment I saw it broadcast on Facebook because it completely redefined competitions for me. It's the semi-final showdown battle at the very last Ultimate Lindy Hop Showdown; all of the best competitors showed up to this event, and completely tore up the floor. It reminded me of the famous ULHS 2006 Fast Dancing video- everyone was dancing their hardest, getting crazy air in their air steps, and feeding off of one another's energy. Delilah Williams and Kenny did a phenomenal job in their spotlights with Jenny Shirar and Christian, helping those two couples advance to the final battle. I'm still so impressed with the dancing in that contest, and we can't wait to welcome Delilah and Kenny to Fog City Stomp this year! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJzAo8jZCzU

Woooeee, what better way to round out this hot weekend than by watching this scorching performance! The champions of the Camp Hollywood Team Division and our Sacramento neighbors, The Midtown Stompers recreated their jaw-dropping, death defying routine at FCS last year. Their hard work shows in their clean lines, crisp formations, and MAD AIR! We love having such incredibly skilled and dedicated dancers share their talents with us! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LAynto-pp4U

Joining Michael Gamble's band on stage is the amazingly talented vocalist Laura Windley! She's a longtime dancer and musician, and one of the most in-demand jazz vocalists for swing dancers. Her ability to evoke the style of classic singers while still maintaining her own distinct voice makes our hearts swell with joy. She makes all of her hard work look easy, impeccably dressed in vintage attire. Read about her vintage fashion research on her blog Lindy Shopper (www.LindyShopper.com), and check out her beautiful singing at the Slow Dance Soirée! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMk_-PHe6gQ&t=1m28s

We LOVE the dancing that came out of our Half and Half (neé Solo 'n Strictly) competition last year! In this unconventional contest, we asked dancers to blend solo jazz and partnered lindy hop into their spotlights, all while maintaining an improvisational spirit. We wanted to challenge dancers to break the typical boundaries of Lindy, and they sure did! The creativity and playfulness of these finalists left stars in our eyes. Major props to the winners Hannah MacKenzie-Margulies and Sean Krazit for bringing it, huge thanks to all of the contestants for giving it their best, and endless gratitude to Clint Baker's Golden Gate Swing Band for their incredible music! We can't wait to see what happens in the contest this year! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fvj0OtdfI4w

Also new to FCS this year are Mia Halloran (Goldsmith) and Andy Reid! This pair is as delightful in person as they are in this photo. We love how elegant and poised they are, but more importantly we love how their attention is focused on one another. They teach dance from a perspective of listening to, taking care of, and respecting your partner. While they have plenty of fancy tricks up their pant-sleeves, they also have fundamentals for days. We love their appreciation for a good clean swing out!

Michael Gamble and the Rhythm Serenaders are new to Fog City Stomp, but they're certainly not new to swing. Michael lives and breathes both jazz music and Lindy Hop! The jazz informs his dancing, and his dancing informs his music. He knows just what dancers like, and writes all of his own arrangements by transcribing the best classic recordings. We greatly admire the care and intention he puts into everything he does. Hear his band play Thursday, Nov 9 at the 9:20 Special and Saturday, Nov 11 at Fog City Stomp 2017! In the meantime, check out Gamble leading the band and playing bass at our local The Bootleggers Ball!

We love the passion and dedication Erin Morris brings to this dance, and we're thrilled to welcome her back for her 3rd year with us! Not only does she work tirelessly to improve her own style and quality of movement, but she also develops the skills and talents of those around her. She leads a fearless team of women called Erin Morris & Her Ragdolls, who are dancing The Sutro Stomp with her in this video. The Sutro Stomp was choreographed by Erin and Joshua Welter for the Solo Jazz students at Fog City Stomp 2015! Check out their unique shapes and playful rhythms!
