Reception: 5:00 PM - 6:30 PM

About the Event:

The Our Compelling Interests book series is launching its third volume. In this new volume, Eboo Patel (Founder and President of Interfaith Youth Core; former faith advisor to President Barack Obama) explores today’s volatile climate of religious conflict, prejudice, and distrust, and examines the principle that the American promise is deeply intertwined with how we engage with people of different beliefs.

The book panel program will feature Eboo Patel as well as volume contributors John Inazu (Sally D. Danforth Distinguished Professor, Washington University in St. Louis), Robert Jones (CEO, Public Religion Research Institute), and Laurie Patton (President, Middlebury College). Nancy Cable (Chancellor, University of North Carolina-Asheville) will moderate the keynote panel.

About the Series:

At a time when society is swiftly transforming, the Our Compelling Interests book series lays out the premise that for a democracy to thrive, diversity is critical. The initiative comes when we are contemplating a changing societal landscape. Major demographic changes taking place in America today necessitate a renewed discussion about diversity. The question we must now ask ourselves is whether we are indeed planning properly, and what shape that plan must take if we are to be successful and prosperous moving forward together. The series explores diversity—in racial, socioeconomic, gender, religious, regional, sexual, and other forms—through accessible, sophisticated, and balanced treatments by leading scholars, writers, intellectuals, and commentators.

The Our Compelling Interests initiative was created by Dr. Earl Lewis and is co-led by Dr. Lewis and Dr. Nancy Cantor. The series is also edited by Drs. Lewis and Cantor.  With support from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Our Compelling Interests is a project of the newly established Center for Social Solutions at the University of Michigan.

About the Organizers:

The Center for Social Solutions at the University of Michigan proposes to produce solutions to three critical problems over the course of the next decade. Dr. Lewis and his colleagues at the Center will address core areas of social concern: diversity and race, water, and the dignity of labor in an automated world.

So much of contemporary society focuses on the identification of the “right” problems. When we turn to solving those problems we often take a disciplinary (e.g. political, psychological, economic, historical, sociological, etc.) or cluster approach (i.e. sciences, engineering, social sciences, humanities or arts). While interdisciplinary teams do exist and work together, bringing together scholars from across the campus with potential partners from beyond the academy is rarer. For the next decade, the Center will do just that: assemble different teams of scholars, policy analysts, arts producers, media experts, philanthropic investors, former politicians and others to address three real problems in real time with the idea of arriving at measurable solutions. For more information, please email the Center at: socialsolutions@umich.edu.

Interfaith Youth Core is a national non-profit organization working towards an America where people of different faiths, worldviews, and traditions can bridge differences and find common values to build a shared life together.  IFYC partners with American colleges and universities, because campus is where educators and students engage the complex ideas that will shape our country’s future. It’s where young people learn to be citizens and leaders. It’s where issues of diversity and difference are explored intellectually and experienced personally and up-close. Campuses are environments that model the highest ideals of civil society alongside some of the most divisive conflicts that we’re grappling with as a country. When interfaith cooperation becomes a part of the college experience, it becomes a part of the American experience.  IFYC equips students, educators, and whole institutions with the vision, knowledge, and skills to advance this on campus and far beyond. Visit IFYC online at www.ifyc.org.
