How do you build initiatives to help prevent childhood trauma or create a tool that allows public school teachers to learn from each other? Creating change within large, complex healthcare and education organizations is challenging. Human-centered design and systems design conquer complexity, addressing the biggest issues of our time by tapping human creativity.

Join ID adjunct faculty, alumni, and other local Denver design leaders for a conversation about the social impact of design, the challenges this work presents, and the difference it makes.

About the panelists

Sarabeth Berk, PhD and Founding Director, Futurebound

Sarabeth is a hybrid professional who calls herself a Creative Disruptor. She blends her artist/researcher/educator/designer identities to lead innovation strategy and design systems that radically rethink old models. Sarabeth is the Founding Director of Futurebound, a movement to change the future of child development by catalyzing an innovation ecosystem in Colorado, and a researcher of professional identity. Her first book, More Than My Title, will be published in April 2020.

Nadine Foik, Design Manager, Catapult Design

Nadine is a designer and facilitator with experience in human-centered service and product design, organizational capacity-building, and design management. A creative and inquisitive problem-solver, her passion lies in capturing, organizing, and optimizing information across stakeholders to co-design solutions toward a just, healthy, and resilient life. As Design Program Manager at Catapult Design, Nadine leads and manages projects, builds new business and strategic partnerships, and contributes to projects as service designer and design researcher.

Caroline Franz (MDes + MBA 2013), Systems Designer, Kaiser Permanente

Caroline’s career began in commercial architecture and interior design focusing on workplace, healthcare, and historical renovation projects in the Midwest. Long hours of detailed drafting and diligent work with clients brought her to her true calling—user-centered design, and specifically, its execution a cross physical and digital environments, services, and touchpoints. Caroline worked with Kaiser Permanente on Care Transformation, a project aimed at transforming our delivery system across the nation. Next she'll bring her background in design, research, and strategy to the Prevention of Adverse Childhood Events project.

Erin Huizenga, Co-Owner and Chief Designer, Desklight

Erin designs to help people learn. Believing solutions are best found in true collaboration with the people who will benefit from them, she helps organizational leaders connect learner-centered research insights with design thinking to build new programs and tools. She has partnered with national organizations to design learning programs for public health and diversity initiatives, designed tools for higher education institutions and public schools, and designed a program to empower high school students to build a portfolio of project-based work. She’s been a nationally featured speaker at CreativeMornings and the HOW Conference and created curriculum and taught courses at IIT Institute of Design and Northwestern University.

Mike Lin, Design & Innovation Leader

Mike spent the last 20 years bringing a human voice to innovation and design. In the first half of his career, Mike worked in consumer goods and services, helping clients like PepsiCo, Diageo, Royal Caribbean, Microsoft and Samsonite develop and launch new products. He has since turned his focus toward design and innovation in healthcare. Mike was a senior member of the Innovation Consultancy at Kaiser Permanente, where he led internal design teams in projects ranging from redesigning nursing shift change to reimagining the way ambulatory services and clinics deliver care. Most recently, Mike served as the VP of Innovation at Centura Health, Colorado’s largest health system, where he was responsible for developing capabilities and platforms for enabling consumers.
