Eunbi Kim's "A House of Many Rooms: New Concert Music by Fred Hersch"

Pianist Eunbi Kim celebrates the release of her debut recording, “A House of Many Rooms: New Concert Music by Fred Hersch” (Albany Records), with a performance at Joe’s Pub, Thursday April 5th at 7pm.

“A House of Many Rooms: New Concert Music by Fred Hersch” was recorded in New York and co-produced by Fred Hersch and Ryan Streber. Special Guest Fred Hersch will appear for a Q&A and there will be an excerpt from "The Ballad of fred Hersch"  by filmmakers carrie Lozano and Charlotte Lagrade shown. Kim is also excited to welcome violinist Sami Merdinian of the Billboard #1 Classical ensemble, Sybarite5, as a Guest Artist. Kim was a fan of Hersch’s jazz recordings when she discovered that he had a treasure trove of classical compositions. A project was born, with Hersch an integral member of the creative team.

Eunbi Kim has performed in esteemed venues across the United States including the 92Y, National Museum for Women in the Arts, Carnegie Hall, and Asia Society of Texas Center. She is the creator of Murakami Music, an internationally lauded theatrical piece that explores the pianists in Haruki Murakami’s novels. Her work, re: last night, inspired by late night conversations and influenced by the in-between states of dreams and delirium, was directed by Daniel Bernard Roumain. It employed an original commissioned work by Roumain for piano and recorded voices, as well as music from Fred Hersch, Toby Twining, William Albright and Nikolai Kapustin.  

Twelve-time Grammy nominee, Fred Hersch, is celebrated as an innovative pianist in jazz music and known for a personal and expressive pianistic style. He has broken deeply rooted barriers as the first openly gay, HIV-positive jazz player, and has lived with the disease for over 30 years. His newly released memoir, “Good Things Happen Slowly: A Life In and Out of Jazz,” chronicles his career, including re-building his health and technique after a months-long coma in 2008 left him unable to hold even a pencil.
