Class Description
In this class we present a neurobiological framework for understanding the nature of upset encounters and discuss common mistakes that people make in attempting to diffuse them. The intervention begins with “checking oneself” and establishing good control of one’s nonverbals, including pace and tone of voice. Then we examine and practice some effective verbal responses that avoid being confrontational. If the temperature is still high, it is sometimes necessary to set limits, so we look at how to do this without them sounding like threats.
