Emergency Neurological Life Support (ENLS) course

About the Course

ENLS is Emergency Neurological Life Support, aka the “ACLS for the brain and spinal cord”, and was developed several years ago by an Emergency Room physician and Neurointensivist via the Neurocritical Care Society (NCS). This course is designed to help healthcare professionals improve patient care and outcomes during the critical first hours of a patient’s neurological emergency. ENLS demonstrates a collaborative, multi-disciplinary approach and provides a consistent set of protocols, practical checklists, decision points, and suggested communication to use during patient management.

Now held regularly at national and international venues, as well as online. ENLS has become the crucial education tool for providers caring for neurocritically ill patients.

Under the leadership of the University of Massachusetts Medical School ENLS course co-directors, neuroanesthesiologist Dr. Shaheen Shaikh and neurointensivist Dr. Marcey L. Osgood, we have put together a phenomenal and informative educational venue.  At the end of this day long course, each participant has the opportunity to get ENLS-certified (valid for 2 years) and we also offer a re-certification course.

UMass Speaker Introductions

Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine

Shaheen Shaikh, MD - Assistant Professor of Neuroanesthesiology and ENLS Co-Director.  Dr. Shaikh well recognized for her contributions to the field of Neuroanesthesia and has been an Invited Speaker for Grand Rounds lectures in New England, Canada, England and India. She has played an important role in the Annual Meeting Society of Neurosciences and Critical Care and the Annual Meeting of the American Society of Anesthesiology. She has been invited to serve as Moderator for several clinical poster sessions.  Dr. Shaikh is currently serving on the Education Committee of Society of Neurosciences and Critical Care, American Society of Neuroanesthesia and the American Society of Scientific and Educational Exhibits. She organized the first ENLS Course at UMass, endorsed by the Neuro- Critical Care Society.

Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery

Marcey Osgood, MD - Assistant Professor of Neurology and ENLS Co-Director.   Dr Osgood is a neurointensivist caring for patients who have devastating neurologic injury and require critical care services. This includes patients with traumatic brain injury, intracranial hemorrhage and ischemic stroke. Her interests include improving medical education with respect to management of neurologic emergencies as well as outcome prognostication following neurologic injury.   

Raphael Carandang, MD - Associate Professor of Neurology.  Dr. Carandang is a neurointensivist and stroke neurologist who provides acute emergent and critical care for patients with ischemic stroke and other devastating neurological diseases like traumatic brain injury, cerebral hemorrhage and subarachnoid hemorrhage. His research interests include cerebral edema, subarachnoid hemorrhage, CNS vasculitis, stroke epidemiology and traumatic brain injury. He is studying post-traumatic cerebral edema and its possible genetic determinants and is co-investigator of Outcome Prognostication in Traumatic Brain Injury (OPTIMISM) study and the randomized clinical trial studying Dantrolene for cerebral vasospasm in aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage among others.

Wiley Hall, MD - Assistant Professor of Neurology; Director of the NeuroICU and TeleStroke Services.  Dr. Hall is a neurointensivist caring for critically ill patients, including those with intracranial hemorrhage, cerebral edema, traumatic brain injury and neuromuscular disorders.

Susanne Muehlschlegel, MD, MPH - Associate Professor of Neurology; Director of Neurocritical Care Research.  Dr. Muehlschlegel is a neurointensivist devoted to improving the care of patients with catastrophic neurological injuries. Her research interests concentrate on outcome prognostication in Neurocritical care, particularly in moderate-severe traumatic brain injury. She is the principal investigator for several research studies at the UMASS Neuro-Intensive care unit (NeuroICU), including the Outcome Prognostication in Traumatic Brain Injury (OPTIMISM) Study. In addition, she is the site-principal investigator for clinical trials involving subarachnoid hemorrhage, intracerebral hemorrhage and large ischemic strokes with severe brain edema.

Richard P. Moser, MD - Professor, Neurological Surgery.  Dr. Moser is an attending neurosurgeon at UMass Memorial Medical Center.  In 2006, he joined the neurosurgery faculty at the University of Massachusetts Medical School as Professor of Surgery and Radiation Oncology as well as a joint appointment in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Pharmacology. Dr. Moser was subsequently appointed chief of the Division of Neurosurgery in 2008 and the first Chairman in the newly formed Department of Neurological Surgery in 2012. His translational research effort is focused on RNAi-based gene therapy for neurodegenerative disease at the UMass RNA Therapeutics Institute. He is founder and medical director of the Neurosurgery Program for Solidarity Bridge, a NGO which advances access to safe, affordable and timely surgical care in Latin America. In the Global Health arena, Dr. Moser serves on the Permanent Council of the G4-Alliance, is a member of the WHO's Global Initiative for Emergent and Essential Surgical Care, the WFNS-WHO Liaison Committee and the Board of the Foundation for International Education in Neurological Surgery.

 Nursing

Gerald Burns, RN - Staff Nurse.  Mr. Burns is currently a staff nurse at UMass Memorial Health Care in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit and formerly staff nurse in the 2 Lakeside Neuro/trauma ICU at UMASS University Medical Center.  This is his second ENLS as a speaker.

Emergency Medicine

Payal Modi, MD, MPH - Assistant Professor, Emergency Medicine; Director, Division of International Emergency Medicine and Public Health.  Dr. Payal Modi is an attending physician in the Department of Emergency Medicine. She is a graduate of Baylor College of Medicine. She completed her residency at Rhode Island Hospital and her Fellowship at Brigham and Women's. 

Pharmacy

Nadine Jaber, PharmD, BCPS - Clinical Pharmacy Specialist - Neuro ICU.  Dr. Nadine Jaber is a pharmacist that is specialized in the pharmacological management of critically ill patients in the Neuro intensive care unit, including patients with traumatic brain injuries, intracranial hemorrhages and ischemic strokes.
