How can you assemble footage in a way that your audience will understand and respond to? Where do you start a cut, and where should a clip end? Whether you’re new to editing or have been at it for a while, you might not know certain lingo or the reasons why some edits work to achieve your narrative objective while others fall short.
Editing Techniques illustrates how you, as an editor, can convey the continuity, comprehension, and emotion of your choosing in the scenes you create.
This is a Post-Production workshop at the Extensions level.

Takes, Scenes, and Sequences
The Perception of the Viewer
Shot Selection
Establishing/Reestablishing Shots
Shot/Reverse Shot
Matching
Cutting on Action/Empty Frames
Cross-Cutting
Long takes, Mise-en-scene
Montage, Continuity Editing and Overlapping Edits
Standard, Jump, and Smash Cuts
J cuts, L cuts, Inserts and Cutaways
Rhythm and Timing
Prerequisite(s):
This is not a software-specific workshop. Fluency and the ability to work independently in one of the non-linear editing softwares listed in Materials below is required.
Materials:
All you need to bring is yourself! Each student will be equipped with a 27-inch iMac with 5K retina display running Avid Media Composer 2018.12, Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2018, DaVinci Resolve 15, and Final Cut Pro X 10.4.4. Personal equipment is not permitted.
The price of workshop includes a one year DCTV Membership giving you access to equipment rentals, post production facilities, and discounts on workshops and events.
