First Annual Invited Practitioner Conference: The challenge for the person of the therapist in the work with disadvantaged families.

Lorenz Clinic announces its first annual Invited Practitioner Conference.  This year's conference will be held Friday, October 13, 2017 at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum and will feature Dr. Harry Aponte, a national expert on The Person-of-the-Therapist model of therapy and training.

For therapists, the work with disadvantaged families faced with persistently destructive personal and societal factors can be demoralizing.  The work demands technical skill to simultaneously address deeply personal wounds and overwhelming social forces.  It also pleads for personal sensitivity and emotional strength that allows therapists to feel the pain and challenge the social odds their clients face.  Dr. Aponte contends that this calls for distinctive training in the use of self that speaks to the therapist's emotional resources and social consciousness.

This presentation will identify six basic therapeutic tasks that Dr. Aponte believes are essential to work with disadvantaged families.  Dr. Aponte will introduce a particular approach, The Person-of-the-Therapist Model, to therapists' use of themselves in the work with these families.  The model emphasizes therapists relating and working through their own life experiences, especially their personal vulnerabilities, as a medium through which to relate to the pain and brokenness of these emotionally and socially vulnerable families.
