Driving Inclusive Innovation for Central Oregon

Mentoring versus Advocacy & Male Advocacy.  Learn the difference, understand the importance of both roles in your organization and resources and skills needed to be a successful mentor and advocate.  The relationships nurtured at work are a crucial element in career success. They provide advice, contacts, opportunities, recognition and the all-important recommendations that can catapult a career into high gear. Almost every organization recognizes the importance of mentors in leadership development. A recent article in Harvard Business Review notes that 59 percent of companies surveyed for a 2010 World Economic Forum report on corporate practices for diversity in 20 companies say they offer formal mentoring programs.  But many forget the importance of an advocate, in a Catalyst survey it surveyed participants who had advocates in 2008, 72 percent of the men and 65 percent of the women had received one or more promotions by 2010.

Building Male Advocates in your organization: Use these tips to identify likely male advocates. This session will spark discussions and role-play how you might put these tips into action in your own organization. These ideas and quotes are taken from research NCWIT conducted with males in technical workplaces. Once you have identified potential advocates, use these tips to increase their advocacy for under-represented individuals.

Most organizations recognize the importance of mentors in leadership development. A recent article in Harvard Business Review notes that 59 percent of companies surveyed offer formal mentoring programs.  However, many companies forget the importance of an advocate/sponsor.  In a survey conducted by Catalyst, 72 percent of the men and 65 percent of the women had received one or more promotions with help of advocates. We will discuss these concepts, participate in mentoring rings and hear about a successful sponsorship relationship with Shannon Keith from Sudara and Jim Schell founder of Opportunity Knocks, Looking Forward and Lights on Publishing.

Second in the series of monthly Inclusive Innovation Workshops that tackle the latest issues companies are facing today.  Each session will cover 30 minutes learning, 30 minutes hands-on activities to jumpstart your organizations' tactical action plans to integrate into your company’s success and 30 minutes discussion with your peers around challenges and opportunities in deploying these tactics.  Of course, in Bend style it’s not all work, we will also provide 30 minutes of networking drinks and snacks.
