Philly Metro Midwives invites you to join us for a day-long experience designed to address the ways in which the communities we serve as reproductive care providers here in Philadelphia and the surrounding area are being harmed by our own implicit biases, unchallenged white privilege, and the oppression created by the principles of white supremacy upon which our nation was established. These biases, privileges, and oppression are ways in which we knowingly and unknowingly contribute to poor health outcomes.
Learning Outcomes:
- Define concepts related to racism, white supremacy, and implicit bias.
- Explore the history of midwifery, obstetrics, and reproductive justice in the United States and how it plays out in helpful and harmful ways in health care systems and institutions.
- Identify examples of implicit bias among participants.
- Illustrate examples of interactions that perpetuate racism in the professional sphere.
- Demonstrate an understanding of strategies used to address these interactions.
- Introduce participants to basic strategies for creating change in their communities and workplaces.
We are hoping to create a space in which candid dialogue can take place and participants can freely and respectfully discuss these complex issues.
Facilitators are midwives Mari-Carmen Farmer, Jatolloa Davis, and Melicia Escobar.
We would like to thank The Midwifery Institute at Thomas Jefferson University for sponsoring the space for this workshop.
-------------------------------------------------------
This workshop is open to midwives, physicians, nurses, and other birth workers and (a limited number of) students.
The proceeds will be used to offset the costs of the training and support future Philly Metro Midwives’ programming. Participants have the opportunity to earmark an additional donation to Philly Metro Midwives during the registration process.
