Overarching Objectives
Master innovative ways to bring coding to life with students
Explore many digital tools, apps, along with online and unplugged resources
Explore different robotics clubs or teams
Implement the 4C’s of 21st Century Skills (collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and creativity)
Develop awareness to digital tools available to teachers and students
Amplify growth mindset
During this innovation workshop, educators will experience coding in a whole new way. Throughout the day educators will experience the joy of coding like students through mini-challenges that will take them through the design thinking process.
In this four-part workshop, I will provide participants with:
Part 1: Understanding “why” coding is a skill all students and educators need
Part 2: Digging Deep into “how” the magic of coding supports all subjects
Part 3: Experience and explore “what” educators can do tomorrow in their classrooms with coding
Part 4: Design a Plan
The participants will discover practical, innovative ways to involve students in coding activities that incorporate problem-solving, critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and much, much more! They will leave with access to the latest, most useful websites, apps, and technology resources for facilitating coding and enhancing student achievement.
This workshop participants need no prior training is needed for you to be a facilitator of coding. Whether you are tech timid or tech-savvy, you will find an abundance of resources. I will help you sort through the wealth of resources and highlight for you the best and most effective ones to be a facilitator of coding to students.
Bring your devices! We will be working through many projects and you will leave with not only the inspiration but also many resources, project ideas, and lessons that you can use with students immediately. There is not just one way to teach coding. I will help you get started and give you the tools and resources you need to move your students onward.
Articulate why Coding is the “New Literacy”
How the implementation of coding not only promotes critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving but also communication and collaboration.
Stimulates learners to become self-directed.
Increases math concepts such as reasoning, spatial awareness, and sequencing.
Explore how coding develops the students' self-confidence.
Become familiar with the availability of many online and offline resources to facilitate coding.
Be empowered through collaborating with like-minded educators
Technology is everywhere and it’s not going anywhere. Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), especially when integrated with other disciplines, are the skills of the future. We need to equip students with the critical skills they need to navigate the world we live in today and thrive in the future.
Coding is a superpower. Learning to code lets students build – not just consume the technology around them like video games, websites, robots and more.
Coding helps students develop new ways of thinking. Learning to code helps students develop other crucial and transferable skills – like computational thinking – allowing them to tackle problems, outside the realm of coding, in new and innovative ways.
Coding helps students understand the world around them better. If we teach biology and mathematics in order to understand the world around them, then knowing the basics of how computers communicate and how to engage with them should be a given.
Coding can help change the world. Empower students to use technology as a creative tool to build solutions for problems or everyday challenges people face.
Coding is fun! Students experience the satisfaction and thrill of building something.
