Southside Denny Bio

Born and raised in South Bend, Indiana, Southside Denny is a legendary bluesrocker and acoustic fingerstyle player with ten albums to his credit. He is also the father/bandleader of The Snyders. He began growing his reputation in the early 1980's being often associated with and seen on stage with numerous Chicago musical heros and influences such as Luther Allison, Sugar Blue, Pinetop Perkins to name a few. Denny performed as opening act for these and many other stellar acts such as Ray Charles, Lonnie Mack, Albert Collins and what resembles a who's who list of Chicago blues acts. In 1984 he and his band (Southside Denny and the Skintones) scored a regional hit with a protest song called 'Ethanol Stinks'. Before disbanding in 1989 the trio recorded two albums (including one with Sugar Blue on harp) and played blues club circuits thoughout several Midwestern states and into the Canadian provinces of Ontario, Saskatchewan and Alberta.

While logging on much more mileage in the early 1990's he scored a regular spot at Buddy Guy's Legends in Chicago by catching the owners eye at a jam night. During that time, club manager (Eric Maxen) referred to Denny's music as being somewhere between Buddy Guy and Johnny Winter. Denny also answered the call to share the stage with many legendary rockers such as John Fogerty, Edgar Winter, BTO and Styxx. A style concocted of rapid-fire yet melodic and soulful playing and lots of open tuning slide guitar, his talents of both guitarist and singer are heralded by fans and fellow players alike.

A musician always in search of new inspiration, Denny spent the bulk of his years in his native state of Indiana, and has lived in areas as diverse as Phoenix, Chicago and now since 2007 in Montréal. In 1999 he was chosen as the 2nd recipient of the Ole Harv Award for lifetime promotion of blues music in the Michiana area, and a year later represented his home state of Indiana in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis. On arriving in Montréal in 2007 he captured third place at the Montréal Grand Prix du Guitare. In 2010 he was awarded Blues album of the year in Québec at the Gala Lys in Montréal for his 2009 release titled Full Circle. In Québec he has performed at the International festival du Jazz du Montréal (Salon de Guitare), and the International Festival du blues de Mont Tremblant, Trois Rivières en Blues, L'October blues, Blues de Farnham, Lachute en Blues and many others.

Avant leur dissolution en 1989, ils ont enregistré 2 albums, dont un incluant Sugar Blue à l'harmonica et joué dans plusieurs états du Midwest américain, ainsi que plusieurs provinces canadiennes.

Musicien toujours en quête de nouvelles inspirations, Denny a passé la majeure partie de sa vie dans l'état d'Indiana, mais a aussi demeuré à Phoenix, à Chicago et depuis 2007, il habite une banlieue de Montréal. En 1999, il fut le 2e récipiendaire du Ole Harv Award pour sa promotion du blues dans la région de Michiana (Michigan-Indiana) et une année plus tard, il a représenté l'Indiana à l'International Blues Challenge à Memphis. À son arrivée au QC, il décroche une 3e place au Grand Prix de guitare de Montréal. En 2010, son disque Full Circle reçoit le prix de l'album blues de l'année au gala Lys Blues. Il a aussi joué au Festival de jazz de Montréal (Salon de guitare), au Festival international de blues du Mont-Tremblant, Trois-Rivières en Blues, L'October blues, Blues de Farnham et plusieurs autres.

De plus, Denny anime occasionnellement des ateliers de guitare et est propriétaire d'une école de guitare, Salon de musique Denny Snyder, où il enseigne à Repentigny. Technicien diplômé, il répare aussi les instruments de ses élèves.
