Dark2Dawn: Bicycling Through History. Riot, Rebellion and Reinvention. Why North Minneapolis Burned!

Bicycle from Dark to Dawn to experience our communities in a deeper way. Please join us on an all-night bike ride through Minneapolis and Saint Paul’s Communities most impacted by historical and institutional racism and the understand the community responses in the African American and Native and LGBTQ communities that have often been described as riots but to the communities, they were uprisings and rebellions to an oppressive social environment. This is local testimony to our ability to celebrate our cultural heritage and promote healing. The ride is supported by The Cultural Wellness Center, members of Slow Roll Twin Cities, Minnesota, The Minnesota Historical Society,  Freewheel Bike,  and Other presenters and presenting organizations.

Dark2Dawn: Bicycling Through History

Begin: The Cultural Wellness Center  Saturday, August 24 - 9:00 p.m. (we will begin gathering at 7:30 pm)

End:   The Cultural Wellness Center, Sun August 25 - 6:00/7:00 a.m.

A spectacular breakfast buffet will be served at rides end.

We will cover approximately 50-60 miles at a moderate pace (10-12 mph) with breaks for refreshments, pit stops, and discussion. We will travel through numerous neighborhoods and geographic landmarks in Minneapolis and Saint Paul on a route that highlights Social Rebellion in the Twin Cities on communities of color and the long term impacts that continue to manifest today, We are focusing on the fact that these impacts were the direct action of community response that resulted in Public Policy that persists today (both good and bad). We will make multiple stops throughout the night to highlight a significant person or significant event relative to that geographic location.  Be prepared to enjoy the night and to process the experience with other bicyclists. This event fuses bicycling, art and music into a life-changing experience. Our goal is to bring history into the light.

Helmet and lights required, of course (headlight and taillight). This is a set date regardless of the weather. Experienced ride leaders are organizing the ride and one or more bicycle mechanics will be part of the group, but you should be prepared to fix your own flats and be self-aware: take personal responsibility for your ability to complete the route. You are responsible for yourself, but we are in this together.

It is 55.00 to join the ride; you will be provided refreshments at all stops but should still have some money for your favorite food and beverages along the way. A commemorative t-shirt, pre-ride fuel, and buffet breakfast are included.
