This technique has many forms and uses. We will demonstrate and try as many as we can. If you don't know about this topic, it's crucial for your photographic art, event, landscape, and creative & portrait wedding photography, especially receptions. This technique can light up your night reception in a very dimly lit venue. It can illustrate a race car moving forward with motion blur.

One example of this technique allows the camera to expose the ambient background scene properly and the foreground subject exposed by flash. Using a tripod can ensure your background is sharp. This is due to a slow shutter speed to expose the background (at a more narrow aperture or lower ISO) where hand-holding is impossible i.e. 1 to 3 seconds. If a portrait, your subject must be completely still during the exposure and be in darkness relative to the exposure otherwise they will be ghosted. Light can't remain on them after the flash fires or they need to be completely still. They can't move off of any bright lights (or brighter background) that may be in the background during shutter open or the light will shine through their body. The flash exposes the foreground subject sharply while the shutter staying open following for several seconds exposes the background. You typically want the background sharp and the tripod works for this technique. This is a great technique for weddings where you want a wide night scene (building or skyline) in the background exposed properly and then moving your couple closer to the camera where you can light them with an off-camera (or on-camera) flash.

As another example and beyond the time allotted for this workshop, we can fire our flash multiple times to freeze subject movement at intervals. For landscape, we can light paint an entire foreground with multiple flash bursts while the shutter remains open.
