An Exploration of Antinatalist Philosophy Through the Lense of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein with Kelly Crodian-Shuff

Location:

The Bike Stop

206 South Quince Street

Philadelphia, PA 19102

21+

Conceived over a series of dark and stormy nights when she was just 18 years old, Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley’s 1818 novel “Frankenstein” continues to chill readers with its strikingly bleak view of the human condition. Ahead of its time and standing in stark contrast the romantic ideals characterized in the work of her peers, Shelley’s tale of the ambitious young scientist and his tragic progeny leads us to question whether consciousness itself may be the true monster.

Although the term “antinatalism” has only recently come to describe the philosophical position that consciousness is tantamount to suffering and that human procreation is inherently unethical, many themes throughout Shelley’s novel are consistent with antinatalist beliefs.

Providing an overview of antinatalist thought and detailing the social, scientific. and biographical contexts at play within the novel, this presentation by Kelly Crodian-Shuff will explore what the tale of Victor Frankenstein's creation can contribute to conversations about the ethics of birth and death today.

The event is free and open to the 21+ public, but tickets are required.
