Trauma Series Workshops at Salve Regina University


The following workshops are intended to meet the needs of providers working with families impacted by sexual abuse, sexual abuse survivors and youth with problematic sexual behaviors. Direct care counselors, bachelor’s level service providers and clinicians who are new to this population will benefit from the workshops.

Each Spring 2020 workshop costs $80 if CEUs are offered, or $70 without.

Workshop CEUs are approved by the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC). ACEP No. 4507

Descriptions and Dates

Involving Families Affected by Sexual Abuse
Wed., Feb 12, 2020, 9 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.

Presented by Melissa Santoro, LICSW, Director of the Outpatient Department, St. Mary’s Home for Children
This workshop will focus on how sexual abuse affects families and ways service providers can provide support and education to assist these families with their needs. This workshop would benefit therapists as well as family service/direct care workers/care coordinators that support children, youth with problematic sexual behaviors and families impacted by sexual abuse.

Aspects of Child Sexual Abuse: Reporting, Response, Recovery

Learn signs and general characteristics of child sexual abuse. Develop a sense of the nature of the impact of the abuse and concrete ways to manage disclosures and respond in a trauma informed manner to child sexual abuse.

An Introduction to Youth Exhibiting Problematic Sexual Behaviors

Participants will receive an introductory/intermediate training on Youth with Sexual Behavioral Problems. Participants will be provided a Trauma-Informed approach to treating YPSB addressing developmental stages, common myths/facts about YPSB, common characteristics of YPSB and core assessment and treatment interventions when working with YPSB.

Using a Trauma Informed Approach

People who are survivors of traumatic events may experience, throughout the lifespan, a multitude of difficulties in various areas of functioning such as social, occupational, emotional and physical health. This training will be an overview of strategies to employ while working with survivors of trauma in either a clinical or case management role. Not only will we discuss how to best approach our work with this population, but how to also take care of ourselves in the process.

Supporting LGBTQ+ Youth

LGBTQ+ youth are at increased risk of sexual abuse and other forms of abuse and discrimination. This training will explain some of the common terminology and concepts used in the LGBTQ+ community as well as basic, concrete tips to improve cultural awareness with this population and increase knowledge of service providers.

Community Supervision for Youth Who Have Sexually Abusive Behaviors
Wed., Apr 8, 2020, 1 p.m. - 4:15 p.m.
Presented by Chris Hebert, LMHC, Juvenile Probation, DCYF
This workshop will focus on supervision of youth who display sexually abusive behaviors in an inclusive, two-tier approach to assess risk within the community. Topics include factors that contribute to problematic sexual behaviors as well as what normal development looks like within this population. The risk, need, and responsivity principals as it relates to the Juvenile population as well as different treatment modalities and what to look for will also be discussed. The stages of a case of this nature, both clinically and legally, will be explored in depth. Included are the legal ramifications a juvenile may experience in the Juvenile Justice System as well as the levels of supervision and conditions of probation. Another topic of discussion is the statistic, dynamic, and protective factors that exist in these types of cases. Lastly, we will discuss and explore ways treatment providers and the Juvenile Justice System can work together to increase the chance of success in each individual case.
