Do you know hiragana, katakana, and some grammar, but don’t know quite how to make that next step? Continuing Japanese might be for you! We are here to help you go beyond the very basics and reach higher levels of Japanese.

THIS MEETUP IS FOR YOU IF:

-You know enough Japanese to take part in activities such as speaking, listening, etc.

-You are ready to learn more difficult grammar concepts; you ever wanted to know what the て-form is? This is your type of meetup.

-You want to meetup with your fellow Japanese learners! Having people helping you always makes something easier.

Meetups will have two parts to them: A lesson (1 hr) and practice (1 hr).

THE LESSON:

The lesson part is simple. We will take a few grammatical points and teach attendees about them. When appropriate, we will give multiple ways of using the concept within Japanese. We will be using the Genki series of textbooks for guidance, but we may include additional points that feel appropriate for the lesson given.

VOCAB AND KANJI:

Every language has that one super difficult thing, and Japanese is no exception. Kanji is usually the most difficult aspect for beginning students, but learning it sooner than later will give you a big leg up! We will be providing vocab lists along with the Kanji for the words. We can give you study suggestions, but it is up to the learner to put in the time. If you want a flashcard system for PC, you can use Anki, found at www.ankisrs.net. It’s also free on Android.

THE PRACTICE:

The practice may sometimes be as simple as speaking while using the grammar of that day’s lesson. Other times it might be something completely different: speaking, listening, reading news in Japanese, etc. The point of this section is to build up your Japanese in a wide variety of ways. More items might be added to the roster to keep things fresh and bolster peoples’ Japanese in new ways.

Practice activities might go over old material, but it’s very important to apply things you learn in different areas. Just because you have learned a concept in writing does not mean you can easily use apply it in speaking. The practice section is important for getting that well-rounded Japanese experience.

– – –

If all this sounds great to you, then you’ll find lots of good times here. Japanese is a fun language to learn. That’s why we all do it. Here you’ll find a group that will help encourage you to keep going with your Japanese.

And one final thing, THIS MEETUP MIGHT NOT BE FOR YOU IF:

-You do not know the alphabet(s) and sound system. We can help you improve, but you it’s best if you know enough to use them functionally. Some Kanji is preferable but not necessary.

-You do not know basic grammar. You should know things like common particles and sentence structure.

With all that said, we hope to see you there! It’s dangerous to go alone! Take this:

頑張って!
