Context is Everything: How ‘Change’ Manifests n the History of Art
1 to 3 p.m. Saturdays, Jan. 25, Feb. 8, Feb. 22,
March 14, March 28, April 1
at UCR Palm Desert Center, 75080 Frank Sinatra Dr.
Context is everything when defining the idea of “change” as it appears throughout the history of art. Scientific breakthroughs during the Renaissance, mechanical devices during the 18th Century, the invention of the camera and the photograph, and the Industrial Revolution changed the way art was made, also influencing the artists that created the most significant works of their time.
This lecture series will use slides and discussion to show how the idea of change manifested, from the Renaissance to Pop Art.
Topics include:
• The Renaissance: Science and Nature
• Impressionism: The Anti-Photograph
• Post-Impressionism: Anticipation of the 20th Century
• Picasso, Cubism, and Early Modernism
• America, the New Frontier: Abstract Impressionism
• Popular Art and the Global Artist
