Keynote: 9:00AM to 9:30AM

Immigrants & Refugees in Our Community: Andrew Kritovich will share information on the refugee and asylee experience in the United States. As the Deputy Executive Director at the Ukrainian Community Center of Washington, Andrew works with refugees and immigrants as they overcome language, cultural, educational and social barriers. He will emphasize the importance of cultural sensitivity, as well as trauma informed care while working with this population. This discussion is relevant for all volunteers and professionals who work to provide refugees, immigrants, and asylees with a sense of unity and community well-being.

Workshop Descriptions

Session 1:

Hands on Learning: Creating Tools and Manipulatives for ESL: Make ESL fun and interactive for students. This workshop explores and create hands-on tools, games, and activities to engage ESL students and promote confidence. A list of easy-to-make and affordable ESL and math tools used in the workshop can be adapted for varying English levels and provides new opportunities for hands-on learning.

Working with Adult Learners: in this training participants will identify, discuss and utilize strategies that facilitate learning and persevering in adult education.

ESOL Teaching Techniques: Learn techniques and activities for teaching English language learners, including those who have no English ability.

Panel Discussion: Working with Adult Learners from the Volunteer Perspective: Are you considering working with adult learners or transitioning into a different area of adult education? Engage and learn from a panel of experienced volunteers working with diverse adult learners with unique needs.

Session 2:

Organizing & Advocacy: Immigrant Rights and Beyond: Gain awareness of the current issues facing immigrants and refugees and what you can do in the classroom to increase advocacy and civic engagement in the communities we serve. This session digs into strategy development for advocacy campaigns, ensuring active roles for low-income and people of color residents through organizing, and the use of tools to assess and cultivate issue development and advocacy strategy. Attendees will have an opportunity to design their own advocacy campaigns and lesson plans on issues important to them.

Preparing for the U.S. Citizenship Interview: This workshop will provide an overview of the U.S. Citizenship Interview process and some helpful steps for preparation. We will provide some useful handouts and resources and some ideas on relevant English Language Learning.

Supporting Re-entry: Recent research indicates that up to two-thirds of released prisoners are rearrested within three years of release and more than a million children have a parent in prison. Men and women enter U.S. prisons with limited work experience, limited education, and limited vocational skills. Many people also enter U.S. prisons with health-related issues ranging from mental health needs to substance abuse histories. When they leave prison, these challenges often remain and impact not only the individuals, but also neighborhoods, families, and society at large. Without skills and health care, many people will return to prison within 3 years of release. This presentation addresses the challenges facing people leaving incarceration with a Q&A/discussion to follow.

ESOL Lesson Planning: Learn how to plan lessons for English language learners and assess what your students know. Get tips on how to be culturally sensitive and how to differentiate instruction for various levels.
