Community Conversation: Climate Change
Please join us for a conversation with Mindy Ahler and Paul Thompson of the Citizens Climate Lobby and Michael Orange, a regional planner and energy efficiency advocate, who are doing an eight-day, 350-mile bike ride to engage communities in west central Minnesota in community conversations on climate change solutions.
The team will take the Northstar commuter train from the Twin Cities to Big Lake, then ride 41 miles to St Joseph for the first of seven Community Conversations on climate change.
The team will spend the night with Jeny and Mike Meyer in St. Joseph, then bike to Alexandria, Fergus Falls, Brainerd and Little Falls, ending in St Cloud on Sunday, August 20.
Called “Low Carbon Crossings,” the ride is specifically planned to travel through mostly rural areas, providing an opportunity to connect urban and rural people, exchange experiences and concerns about climate change, while demonstrating bicycling as a fun, low-carbon way to travel.
What changes do you see in Minnesota’s climate, in our new era of “rollercoaster climate”? Heavy rains followed by droughts, impacting our crops? Higher dew points increasing water temperatures in our lakes, promoting algae growth? Longer growing seasons producing more pollen, affecting asthma and allergy sufferers? Milder winters bringing more ticks, mosquitoes and “vector-borne” diseases -- such as Lyme disease and West Nile virus? Bring your thoughts and solutions.
Join the conversation on Sunday at the co-op -- and bring friends!
Bike riders are welcome to ride with the Low Carbon Crossing folks in to St. Joseph on Sunday and out to Alexandria the following day.
