For years, students and faculty from The University Speaking Center at UNC Greensboro have served as communication coaches to Peacehaven Community Farm's Core Members.  As we launch the next chapter in this partnership, both Peacehaven and The Speaking Center are excited to announce:

Open enrollment weekly activity-driven oral communication programming for adults with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities in the Greensboro area. Participants and their care givers will gain oral communication competencies through improv and experiential based engagement.

Caregivers/companions, who will be invited to participate, need to stay for the whole program.

No need to register caregivers.

Repeat attendance is encouraged.

For more about our partnership, here is an article detailing some of our experiences together.

Note that we will NOT be meeting on Tuesday, March 3rd due to Spring Break for UNC Greensboro.

Makeup dates will be on April 14th and April 21st in the event of inclement weather.

Parking:

Parking will be available in the Walker Avenue Parking Deck at UNC Greensboro located directly next to the Bryan Business School. The rate is $2 for the first hour and $1 for every subsequent hour.

Bryan Building Room 105:

After parking in the deck, you will exit the Theta Street side and go across Theta Street to the Bryan Business School. You will then go down the sidewalk beneath the bridge into the lower level entrance of the building, located on Theta Street, as we will be located on the ground floor. There will be signs placed on the doors to assist you in finding the classroom.

Follow this link to the location of the Walker Avenue Parking Deck, which is indicated on the map with a 'P'.

Each week will have a different focus:

Lesson 1: Participants will practice smiling, using mirrors to practice 'trying on' smiles based on pictures we will provide.

Lesson 2: Participants will work on open and tall posture through brief presentations in which participants will share about themselves.

Lesson 3: Participants will hold practice conversations and learn about nonverbal aspects of communication.

Lesson 4: Participants will take on the role of being a job interviewer, and will interview their caregivers to practice eye contact.

Lesson 5: Participants will be given a random household object and asked to craft a product pitch and apply all of the skills they have learned.

Each of these lesson plans will be repeated in the same order until the end of the program.
