Needles' work enters the modern art conversation through the disciplines of industrial fabrication and architecture. He uses raw materials, semi or fully fabricated parts, and construction materials to heighten the absurdities of seemingly banal structures. Drawing inspiration from the incredible dichotomy between the body and the mundane visual/material world he lives in. His work attempts to embrace the concept of physical liminality, considering the industrial nature of the cities he has lived in and the impact of spaces on the human experience. In return, his sculptures address the impact of the body on those structures and the material identities within these spaces. By hand painting, applying heat, cutting, drilling, and screwing he exploits the ductility of common materials to reference forms and ideas of the human body, while maintaining prior associations of these objects.
