A 3-time recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Fellowship Award, Jimmy Halperin’s influences include Art Tatum, Sal Mosca, Lennie Tristano, Charlie Parker, Warne Marsh, Bud Powell, Charlie Christian, and Lester Young, plus such great singers as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Lena Horne. Coming from a musical family, he took group music lessons at four years old, piano at six, and saxophone at nine. He has appeared at jazz festivals and around the globe, and performed on radio, film, television, print and multiple record labels. Foreign and domestic music conservatories have had Jimmy instruct master improvisation classes. Most often a small jazz-combo player, Jimmy’s “Live At A-Trane: Berlin” with Pal Nyberg Trio received four stars from Downbeat Magazine: “Halperin projects a quiet swagger onto his improvisations, resulting in a distinct artistic voice that has landed him near the forefront of the avant-garde and creative music scenes.”
