Mahler himself called his Fifth Symphony a “foaming, roaring, raging sea of sound.” It begins simply enough, with a lone trumpet fanfare, but quickly explodes into one of music’s most passionate, thrilling symphonies. The Adagietto is probably the single most famous piece by Mahler—Leonard Bernstein played it at JFK’s funeral, and it is liberally used as the soundtrack for the film “Death in Venice.” A performance by The Cleveland Orchestra of this monumental, superheated symphony is not to be missed.
