Description: This class is an introduction into blacksmithing and is a prerequisite to the Advanced Blacksmithing classes and the use of the blacksmithing equipment at Oahu Makerspace. Student will learn the basic blacksmithing fundamentals through classroom and hands on projects such as forged animal heads, metal roses, or artistic twists. All tools, safety equipment, and raw material stock will be provided.

Shop safety
Material prep and layout
Tool identification and proper usage
Forging techniques
Final finishing of forged items
Hours: 2 day class - 4 to 6 hours per day during normal Oahu Makerspace hours. Classes maybe scheduled to occur during non-shop hours must be planned in advance and may incur an additional $40 fee per student.
Attendees: 1 student per class - Minimum age 14 years old. (All minors must have their adult guardian present at all times.)
Price Range: $180 for Oahu Makerspace members and $200 for non-members.
Dress Code:
Dress appropriately, items such as shorts, low cut tops and tank tops are not recommended due to flying sparks
No clothing made from synthetic blends or synthetic fibers are to be worn around the forge
Clothing made from leather and other natural fibers such as cotton, wool or HEMP etc. are required while forging
Covered shoes (Tennis shoes are acceptable however leather boots are preferred.)
Safety glasses and hearing protection will be provided however students are encouraged to bring personal fitted safety equipment for added comfort
Please be aware that the hot metal slag/sparks can ruin clothing and shoes
