László Moholy-Nagy’s New Bauhaus was built on tactile and experiential learning. For the 100th anniversary of the global Bauhaus, what if we could manifest Moholy’s concept of the “School as Lab” to the “City as Lab”?

This will be a 2-day immersion curated and produced by experience designers in September 2019 to:

  • trace the historical roots of the Bauhaus to today’s most provocative examples of innovation in our city

  • relish tangible experiences and intimate conversations with the best of Chicago designers, architects, artists and changemakers

  • tell our city’s story through multi-layered and diverse perspectives

  • explore the notion of “making as thinking” from the past to present

  • find inspiration for your own work and make new connections in our ever-evolving city

About Openbox

Openbox designs for better urban living. We create immersion experiences to enable a deeper understanding of the intersection of people and systems.  During trans:form:ed Bogotá, peer-based, cultural immersion and the Strategy World Tours of Mexico City and São Paulo, participants explored both physical and conceptual spaces embodying the methodology of design and the innate human desire for community.

About the Film

The New Bauhaus is the story of how László Moholy-Nagy brought a movement to Chicago in 1937, forever imprinting a legacy on design, photography and arts education in America and beyond. It’s a feature length documentary about art, vision and perseverance in a transformative time.

In Chicago, The New Bauhaus evolved from its origins at the German Bauhaus into an extraordinary flowering of interdisciplinary design pedagogy premised on the notion that “the whole field of contemporary architecture and design must be based upon an indivisible unification of formerly separated and independent fields.” Our film is anchored around the life and vision of Lászlo Moholy-Nagy, a man ahead of his time and increasingly relevant in today’s contemporary art and design discourses.
